Plagiarsm Policy

The Journal of Social Media Computing (SMC) editorial board acknowledges that plagiarism is unequivocally unacceptable. Consequently, it has established the following policy outlining specific actions (penalties) to be implemented when plagiarism is detected in an article submitted for publication in SMC. Plagiarism is defined as the "use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's original work."

Our Policy:

  1. Submissions must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Any material reproduced verbatim from another source must be distinctly identified as separate from the original text using (1) indentation, (2) the use of quotation marks, and (3) proper citation of the source.
  2. Any text exceeding the standards of fair use, defined herein as more than two or three sentences or equivalent, along with any graphic material reproduced from another source, necessitates permission from the copyright holder and, when feasible, the original author(s). Additionally, identification of the source is required, such as prior publications.
  3. When instances of plagiarism are identified, the Editor-in-Chief responsible for the review of this paper will confer on appropriate measures by the extent of plagiarism detected, following the guidelines set forth below:

Level of Plagiarism

  1. Minor: A short section of another article is plagiarized without any significant data or idea taken from the other paper.
    • Action: A warning is given to the authors and a request to change the text and properly cite the original article is made
  2. Intermediate: A significant portion of a paper is plagiarized without proper citation to the original paper
    • Action: The submitted article is rejected and the authors are forbidden to submit further articles for one year
  3. Severe: A significant portion of a paper is plagiarized that involves reproducing original results or ideas presented in another publication.
    • Action: The paper is rejected and the authors are forbidden to submit further articles for five years.

It is acknowledged that all authors bear full responsibility for the content of their submitted manuscripts, as they are required to sign the SMC Copyright Transfer Form. In instances where a penalty is imposed for plagiarism, all authors will face the same consequences.

Should a second instance of plagiarism committed by the same author(s) be detected, the Editorial Board, comprising the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Members, in conjunction with the Chair of the Editor-in-Chief, will deliberate and decide on the measures to be enacted. The author(s) may be permanently prohibited from submitting future articles.

This policy is also applicable to materials reproduced from another publication by the same author(s). If an author intends to use text or figures that have been published previously, the specific paragraphs or figures in question must be clearly identified, and a reference to the prior publication must be provided. It is recognized that, in the case of a review paper or a tutorial paper, much of the material may have been previously published.

The author is expected to identify the source of any previously published materials and to obtain permission from the original author and the publisher prior to use. If an author submits a manuscript to SMC that exhibits significant overlap with a manuscript concurrently submitted to another journal, and this overlap is uncovered during the review process or subsequent to the publication of both papers, the editor of the other journal will be informed, and the matter will be regarded as a severe case of plagiarism. Significant overlap is defined as the inclusion of identical or nearly identical figures and identical or only slightly modified text constituting one half or more of the manuscript. Cases of self-plagiarism involving less than one half but exceeding one tenth of the manuscript will be treated as intermediate plagiarism. Should self-plagiarism occur solely within the methods section, it will be classified as minor plagiarism.

If an author wishes to employ some of their previously published material to elucidate the presentation of new results, such material must be identified, and the differences between the previously published work and the current publication must be articulated. Permission to republish must be secured from the copyright holder. In instances where a manuscript was originally published in conference proceedings and is subsequently submitted for consideration in SMC, either in its identical form or as an expanded version, the authors must disclose the name of the conference proceedings and the publication date while obtaining the requisite permission from the copyright holder to republish. The editor reserves the right to decline acceptance of such a paper for publication.

Nonetheless, an author is permitted to utilize material from an unpublished presentation, including visual displays, in a subsequent journal publication. If a manuscript that was originally published in another language is submitted, the authors must disclose the title, date, and journal of the original publication, as well as secure copyright. The editor may approve such a translated publication in an effort to engage a broader audience. The editor may also select a specific paper that has been published (e.g., a “science” paper) for republication to provide a comprehensive perspective on a series of papers published within a single issue of SMC. This republication will be distinctly identified as such, with the date and journal of the original publication noted, and the permissions of the author(s) and the publisher must be obtained.

The SMC layout editor for the Journal holds responsibility for maintaining a list of authors subject to penalties and will ensure that no authors associated with a submitted paper appear on this list. Should a banned author be identified, the layout editor will inform the Editor-in-Chief, who will undertake appropriate actions. This policy will be made readily available on the website, along with submission instructions for manuscripts, and a copy will be sent to the authors in the confirmation email upon receipt of their original manuscript. A statement will be added to the copyright transfer form to indicate that the author(s) have acknowledged having read the Plagiarism Policy.
